Editorial Photography

What is Editorial Photography?

Editorial Photography is a broad term used to separate this type of photography from other forms such as Executive Headshot Photography or Event Photography, although there may be some overlap in subject matter.

Editorial Photographs are photographs that are used to illustrate and support an accompanying story in a publication - be it a newspaper, magazine, web site, catalog or book. An Editorial Photograph can be a photo of a person, place, product or food item - anything.

Architectural and Interior Design Photography

I've had the priviledge of working with many renovation and style magazines as well as home builders to create captivating images of their work. My photographic style uses a combination of wide angle and telephoto lenses and creates a feeling of great space even in the smallest of rooms.

Working with art directors and editors has taught me the unique requirements of editorial photography. I always keep in mind things like size and aspect ratio. A photo is no good to the client if it won't fit in the alloted space on the page.

Product and Food Photography

It may seem that I've lumped two dissimilar subjects together here, but the disciplines involved in both food photography and product photography are very much the same. Both are generally done on a table-top setup so that lighting and composition can be tightly controlled. Art direction from the client, a graphic designer or art director is very beneficial and welcomed on every assignment but not necessary. Food Photography on the other hand, usually requires the use of a food stylist or chef on the shoot as well as art direction.
